Guests on the catamaran ferry can use their KatCard for cash-free check-in.

Short description

Guests on the catamaran ferry can use their KatCard for cash-free check-in and payment without having to acquire a physical ticket. The KatCard is valid for one year – and travel for ticket holders is 30 percent cheaper than the regular tariff. Katamaran Reederei offers two eTicketing options: Instead of a "normal" ticket, the individual ticket is electronically saved on the KatCard when checking in. Alternatively, passengers who use a cell phone with NFC functionality (Near Field Communications) can store the "card" on their cell phone and use it to purchase their ticket.

Project goal

The KatCard is meant to make the check-in process even more simple and convenient for occasional passengers in the Lake Constance region.

Benefits

No more queues or looking for change at the catamaran jetty. Users also benefit from cheaper travel fares.

Project status

Guests traveling on the catamaran were able to check in with the KatCard without cash as from the end of 2007, or obtain tickets by mobile phone. These two e-ticketing opportunities have now been ended by T-City Friedrichshafen in agreement with the catamaran operator, Katamaran-Reederei Bodensee GmbH. The pilot project ended prematurely owing to the withdrawal of supplier GEMAPPS. The discount of around one-third – KatCard holders pay only EUR 6.30 instead of the normal EUR 9.50 for one journey – remains unchanged. T-City Friedrichshafen can be regarded as a workshop for the future, in which innovative products and solutions are tested for the first time. As is the case at the end of every test, the results will ultimately be a decisive factor for continuation. We thank Katamaran-Reederei Bodensee GmbH for the excellent cooperation and the confidence placed in the Friedrichshafen T-City project.
