Zeppelin University Institute researches T-City

Apr 09, 2009

Researching innovative information and communication applications in T-City and combining these with other research initiatives is an important component of the project’s success. Deutsche Telekom Institute for Connected Cities (TICC) is making a contribution to this.

With the shared TICC Institute, Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen scientifically accompanies the activities of Deutsche Telekom in T-City - in addition to the ongoing activities of the University of Bonn. “In the collaboration of municipality, science, and business, we are witnessing one of the most important starting points for knowledge transfer to the city of the future,” said Ferdinand Tempel, Head of the T-City Representative Office in Friedrichshafen. “With the founding of the TICC, we have guaranteed that the projects are utilized scientifically and placed in a larger context.”

The director of the Institute since January, 2009, is Dr. Jörn von Lücke, who also occupies the management and information systems chair, which was founded at the same time. “One of our goals is to scientifically attend to the modernization of the city and administration through research projects and teaching,” said von Lücke. “The emphasis consists of subjects from e-Government and e-Business – for instance, the telephone number 115 as an entryway to all administrative services.” Other projects are devoted to city wikis and city commemoration. Furthermore, von Lücke heads FOKUS projects for standardized contact persons, document safes, and competency finders at the Fraunhofer Institute. “There are very many approaches and research fields that deal with advantages and potentials of electronic networking,” said Jörn von Lücke. “In T-City, we have the opportunity to research and assess them and accelerate their implementation in their practical testing.”

The practice must be an elementary component of all research. This is made clear with the example of student Eike Wobker: He participates in Institute projects and is a T-City ambassador at the same time. “As part of this activity, I exchange experience with other students or pupils in order to improve the site and life quality in Friedrichshafen,” said Wobker. “It’s unbelievably exciting for me to be there as an ambassador for these people and simultaneously work on solutions for them in a course of studies.” For the Institute director, the “Deutsche Telekom workshop of the future” is also a “nearby” object of research in every respect. “In T-City, we can analyze how the networked city facilitates the daily life of its inhabitants,” said Jörn von Lücke. “This makes it possible for us to design comparable models for the future.”
